Orange supervisors decide in Wal-Mart’s favor

Wal-Mart has won a battle in its bid to build a Supercenter near a Civil War battlefield in Virginia.

In Orange County, the Board of Supervisors rejected a coalition’s request to join a planning study for an area near the Wilderness battlefield.

A majority of the five supervisors said they considered the offer an attempt to delay or derail the store. They relayed their sentiments in a letter this week to Civil War preservationists.

Wal-Mart’s plans have angered historians, who contend the store will be too close to a significant battleground.

The company just recently submitted revised plans for the store. Planners have yet to vote on the proposal.

Too late now but remember this the next time any of them come up for re-election. VOTE ‘EM OUT!

I always remember what a local historian said about the fallen on a Civil War Battlefield. “Bury them where they fell”. And you know every single casualty was not dug up and reburied in a cemetery. As far as I’m concerned every battlefield is a cemetery. So Orange, build your big box on our fallen heros. Money always comes before honor.

See, Culpeper, you’re not the only ones who have Board problems!  A large number of us do not want a WalMart and especially where it will pollute (noise, traffic, smells, etc.) the environment and open the doors for other box-store destruction of trees, land and additional pollution.  Thank you Board for ignoring us yet again.

Looks like we will be shopping less in Fredericksburg in the future. Route 3 is already extremely congested between LOW and Fredericksburg. Building the Walmart on hallowed ground will only increase traffic. Oh, well, there is still Charlottesville.
