HOW I SEE IT: Free Dental Clinic provides a great service

We are frequently made aware of the giving nature of our community. All too often the kindness and love of our fellow man by the residents of Culpeper are lost when the focus is on the undeclared war between the Town Council and the county supervisors.

This story deserves the attention and support of our citizens.

The Lewis Armstrong Free Dental Clinic is an outreach initiative of Healthy Culpeper and is named in honor of long-time Culpeper dentist Dr. Lewis Armstrong. This initiative, supported by a skeleton staff, provided dental care to 107 residents of Culpeper County between Jan. 1 and June 30 this year. Based on the average fee charged by dentists in Culpeper, this translates to $19,482 of care and does not include donated volunteer hygiene services provided by Mrs. Diana Corbin.

The volunteer staff includes Dr. Robert McCall, Dr. E. Lee Simpson, Mrs. Paula Fincham, Mrs. Sherry Thornhill, Mrs. Esmie Roth and the previously mentioned Mrs. Diana Corbin.  These services are provided three afternoons and several evenings per month.

Funds to support this service for the last six months have been donated by:
- $15 patient co-pays
- Dr. and Mrs. Tom Armstrong
- Culpeper Mid-Day Lions
- Culpeper 92 Lions

The Free Dental Clinic would welcome additional volunteer dentists, hygienists and dental assistants to allow an expansion of the hours of operation.

Individuals interested in becoming a contributor to this worthy cause should contact Dr. McCall at 825-2444. Individuals or organizations wishing to contribute to the Lewis Armstrong Free Dental Clinic may also contact Dr. McCall.

One hundred percent of all donated funds go directly toward clinical care. These funds actually procure consumable dental supplies.

Residents of Culpeper County desiring treatment from the Free Dental Clinic must have a valid Social Security number and meet strict income guidelines. Appointment information can be obtained by calling Mrs. Esmie Roth at 729-6484.

The $19,482 of dental care was provided with volunteer labor and approximately $3,000 of donated funds. (Pretty good return on the investment and another indicator of the giving nature of the residents of Culpeper.)

Lisa Frank is an incredibly popular children’s artist, and a lot of young females go absolutely gaga over her work. Lisa Frank started making stickers in 1979, and expanded into school supplies (though other products are available) featuring cute animals, unicorns, and rainbows – stuff little girls are into, and people will shell out payday loans to get her stuff. Her business is an empire in its own right, but there rumor persist that sugar, spice, and anything nice is severely lacking behind the scenes, and that she is awful to work for. (Not that a children’s company would be greed hungry, would it?)  Still, a lot of people are willing to sue unsecured loans to get Lisa Frank products.
