The first week of June 2009: Seven days that threaten to change history

Perhaps historians will say that American life changed in the first week of June 2009.
In the summers of 1981 and 1982, Timothy F. Geithner was a student at Peking University but on Monday, June 1, 2009, he was there as the U.S. Treasury Secretary “to explore our common interest in international financial reform.” 1
“China, despite your own manifest challenges as a developing country, you are in an enviably strong position,” Geithner told his audience. But for the United States, “The fallout from these events has been brutally indiscriminant, affecting those with little or no responsibility for the events that now buffet them, as well as on some who played key roles in bringing about our troubles.”
“I believe,” announced Geithner, “that a greater role for China is necessary for China, for the effectiveness of the international financial institutions themselves, and for the world economy. China is already too important to the global economy not to have a full seat at the international table, helping to define the policies that are critical to the effective functioning of the international financial system.”
According to The New York Times, China’s monthly car sales have exceeded those in the U.S. since January, 2009. 2 GM filed for bankruptcy on the same day as Geithner’s speech. 3 This helps explain why, during Geithner’s visit, GM announced on June 2nd a sale of its Hummer brand to China’s Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. 4
The price or terms have not been released, but the Shanghai Daily noted that GM had told the bankruptcy court that Hummer’s value was around $500 million. 5
In China, the Hummer is known as “Han Ma”, the “fierce horse.” The $200,000 sales price of a Hummer in China is definitely fierce. 6
One Chinese state-run newspaper described Tengzhong’s purchase of Hummer as a “snake trying to swallow an elephant.” 7 Marketing specialist Wang Yukun described the plan as “childish”. Financial commentator Ye Tan said it was “unpromising”. 8
GM CEO Fritz Henderson explained the reason Hummer was sold to a four-year old Chinese company with no history or experience in automobile production: “The potential buyer Sichuan Tenzhong offered the best overall alternative, and we did not have [a] broad portfolio of other buyers!” 9
China Daily reports “the forces behind Tengzhong’s move may actually be Sichuan Huatong Investment Holding Co. and US-based investment bank Morgan Stanley.” 10 Citigroup was GM’s financial adviser in the Hummer sale. 11
The sale, said a Los Angeles Times columnist, “underscores China’s growing economic might at a time when U.S. industrial prowess is flagging.” 12
Back at the White House, on June 1st, President Obama proclaimed June 2009 to be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, stating: “At the international level, I have joined efforts at the United Nations to decriminalize homosexuality around the world. Here at home, I continue to support … enhancing hate crimes laws, supporting civil unions and Federal rights for LGBT couples, outlawing discrimination in the workplace, ensuring adoption rights, and ending the existing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy ...” 13
On Thursday, June 4th, in Cairo, Egypt, President Obama declared, “I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear.” 14
To help the Muslim world, Mr. Obama said, “On science and technology, we will launch a new fund to support technological development in Muslim-majority countries, and to help transfer ideas to the marketplace so they can create more jobs.” 15
On Friday, June 5th, the U.S. Labor Department announced that 345,000 more American jobs were lost in May, pushing the unemployment rate up to a 26-year high of 9.4 percent. 16
And that was the end of the week that changed American life.

You met with half of your cult? They live out of state? They follow your advice not to pipe in? What a load!
Ordinary Woman
Please elaborate on “continued healing in the brain”.
Also, is OW your preferred ID?
And, where in the !@#$%^& is the login link? The only way I’ve been able to login is to click on Post A Comment, and then respond to the login directive.
GeezerGuy, I did read your link, and your comments here.
My heart goes out for the pain you have suffered in life, (divorce, child custody), and the pain of your body, hunger strikes and a bullet. My belief system does not allow for me to hurt my body, no matter the cause.
So, even though you were trying to accomplish a noble task, I do not approve of the way you did it, though I understand what was going on at the time.
I wish you continued healing in the brain, and hope and pray you will seek solace in Christ Jesus for your eternal life…as you will be made whole again in heaven.
So nice to feel missed.
Had a great weekend at a college graduation with about half of my CSE followers at OU.
You all entertain them so much, I wish you could know, but they live out of state, and upon my advice, do not pipe in on our discussions.
Well, well, OW…Just so you have something to read when you return from your long weekend….How do you know you have 30??? “followers”? Are you organizning a crusade? And if you are the leader,( you must be if you have followers) where does your cohort Sharman fit in the column? I believe it was “W” who termed the present debacle in the middle east a crusade and then had to eat those words as well as his comedy routine aboard the “ABE” when he declared ‘MISSION ACCOMPLISHED’. I know you will say you have said nothing about a crusade but you did say you have followers so it sounds very suspicious to me.
OW has “followers”??? There’s 30 of them? Are we talking cult, or is just more BS that reveals things about OW she really didn’t intend to reveal.
“So till next time ... I’m off for a long weekend away.“ hmmm, was this another untruth?

For your convenience, here’s a copy of the response to your inquiries which got buried:
A legitimate hunger strike has no promises. If one doesn’t believe in the cause enough to die for it, forget it.
None of the hunger strikes were for the Constitutional Amendment. If we’re lucky, this will happen before the end of this century. I’ve got my money on an emerging democracy going this route long before we do.
The second the bullet went through my head I won.
As for accomplishments, they include putting the issue directly on the desks of Attorney General Reno and Secretary of Treasury Bentson and on the desk of William Jefferson Clinton’s Chief of Staff. Then governor of minnesota Jessee Ventura was similarly implicated. Had I died from the head shot, or the hunger strike for that matter, each of these hunger strike “targets” should have been charged, tried and convicted of manslaughter. And, if this were, in fact, even remotely a democracy, they would now be serving time for lesser crimes. If this ultimately happens, then we will have a more legitimate claim to being a democracy.
It resulted in outing of international fascism, perhaps a threat more ominous that terrorism through the simple mechanism of succinctly defining it, to wit:
fascism: arbitrary elitism
It also garnered world wide attention ala “the French think elitism is good”; and “60 million yeses”. You can find these by using the link given earlier and then doing a text search.
Briefly, rogersk, (Ordinary Woman followed the link in my comment) the Constitutional Amendment proposes creating a very, very large pool of demographically representative, and qualified, candidates. Training them rigorously and then using a computer to randomly pick the ultimate office holder. And I trust this answers your apolitical question, also.
The lasting effect which concerns me most is a disturbingly large reduction in blood flow to the right hemisphere of my brain, somewhere between twenty and 70 or 80 percent.
You’re right about my age, Ordinary Woman. The sad truth is I really don’t know how I am. And something is missing for me with this: “Is this in fact you or just something you were referring to?”
ogersk and Ordinary Woman
I posted a response to your comments/questions last night at 9:59. It is now buried on page 5.
Same ‘ol same ‘ol huh ELD. Maybe you need some time away. I have well over 30 followers to back my ego…you go massage yours, mine is fine.
How dense are you that you can’t grasp that I don’t play the “gimme proof game with you” anymore? You either ignore what’s been posted, wave it off as “lies”, or babble incoherently while claiming your victory on some point only you seem to be able to understand. There is no debating with you, only the making fun of you. Which is what EVERYONE is doing. You’re not flattered. You are most likely hissing since obviously they are all haters of you and Sharman.
BTW - Your last few posts sound like you are whistling in the dark. So go ahead and declare a victory and take your long weekend at the sanitorium.
