Town Council running well

Judging solely by the record number of candidates (11), the upcoming Town Council election is likely to be the most watched in recent memory.

The past three council elections have had similar results with the winner taking about 20 percent of the vote and the rest of the field not far behind, mostly in the mid- to upper teens. In 2004, there was only a five-vote difference between fourth place (which won a seat) and fifth, which was out of the running. That was with only about 1,000 voters.

There should be more voters this year. But with so many candidates the odds of the difference between fourth and fifth is likely to be very thin. While it is a cliché to say every vote counts, one vote may very well make the difference between winning and losing this time around.

Three incumbents are running (Chris Snider, Mike Olinger, and Chip Coleman) and one former Town Council member (Bobby Ryan). While there are a lot of issues at stake, it is clear that illegal immigration was the prime issue for a slate of four candidates I call the HPC4 (Jerry Beckett, Pat Baker, William Platts and Julie Peppe). HPC is the anti-illegal immigration group that calls itself Help Protect Culpeper.

While some of those candidates like to give the impression that they are all independent and are not single-issue candidates, HPC president and TC candidate Beckett told the Star-Exponent in January that “We have four candidates running and we all have similar views.”

I have little doubt that their prime reason for running was their hopes of taking over the town council with fellow HPC member Steve Jenkins. Jenkins told the CSE last week that he wanted to see “the town of Culpeper adopt a resolution similar to the one adopted last year in Prince William County” that would increase police powers to enforce immigration laws and deny certain public services to illegal aliens. Jenkins acknowledges that such policies can open the town to expensive litigation but “that’s no reason” not to do it.

Even before any lawsuits, the policy will cost Prince William County taxpayers $6.4 million just to begin imple-mentation, then millions more annually. But perhaps more important in the long run is that the anti-immigrant image makes it hard to sell PWC as “progressive, dynamic, and thriving” said the chairman of the county chamber of commerce recently in the Washington Post. But this is the direction that the HPC4 wants to take Culpeper. And to do that they need to take over the Town Council.

In some of their CSE interviews, the HPC4 has tried to portray themselves as concerned about multiple issues. But invariably, when they would attend council meetings they would leave shortly after their public comments or after immigration issues were finished being discussed. In fact, during last Tuesday’s budget meetings, none of the HPC4 candidates showed up at either the afternoon or evening sessions. I guess how the people’s money is spent is not real important to them.

The HPC4 candidates have long been openly confrontational with the entire board (except for Jenkins). If they are elected, forming a working relationship with the remaining council members — critical to getting the tough work done on the real problems facing the town — will be very difficult, if not impossible.

During the incumbents’ watch the past four years, overall taxes have been lowered while services have improved. Those incumbents also have the hands-on experience necessary to deal with the often complicated issues.

But if you think keeping illegal immigrants from getting library cards is more important than experience, lower taxes and more services, by all means vote for the HPC4.

Last word: Those three incumbents have been criticized by some for presiding over the rapid growth the town has seen in recent years. But the zoning that made all those housing developments possible was approved decades ago, some of it before two of the incumbents were even born.

Iceni I don’t believe my family or any family living paycheck to paycheck is because of illegal immigration.  The current economy is bad.  We are in a recession.  People were foolish and got subprime loans and are now foreclosing at astronomical rates.  What breaks my family budget is fuel cost which now brings an increase in everything from utilities, food and anything else we purchase.  I have watched minimal raises not keep up with inflation.  Sorry but I don’t see illegal immigration being the cause of any financial issues in my home.  Yes illegal immigration needs to be dealt with.  But since the federal governement and our elected officials in Washington, DC to include the President refuse to do something, it will be a problem for years to come.  I do not support illegal immigration.  I do not support amnesty for everyone.  I also refuse to support unlawful an unconstitional tactics at our local level to deal with it.  Our town and county are already facing serious budget financial issues.  Lawsuits from local ordinances we already know are unconstitutional will only put us in the red even more.  I hope that makes sense.

Iceni- I’m not going to dispute anything you say.  Illegal immigration is an important issue facing this nation.  But what I was writing about was whether voters should be supporting candidates who give every appearance of focusing only on that one issue.

Robert - thanks for an informative look at the candidates. The fact I like is that there are choices. And if CSE readers, interested citizens, savvy voters and the combination of all of the above look carefully at both the words and actions of this large field of candidates, they will be able to make informed decisions as to whom to vote for next month.
Too bad we don’t have more choices for each election ... local, state and national. (J. Walker)

Immigration has direct massive negative consequences on today’s and yesterdays economy.

The pro-illegal immigrant special interests groups use the same MANTRA, as though by confusing the words is going to change the demands of the majority of logical thinking citizens and legal residents. Most national newspapers and the media, always categorizes ALL people who enter America as immigrants!  There is a stark difference between those people who are inspected for contagious diseases, criminal backgrounds and have been issued a entry visa. People who ignore THE PEOPLE’S laws are illegal immigrants or illegal aliens? In most newspapers the editors have been brain-washed or lobotimised, because they refuse to illustrate the massive difference between legal and illegal.

AFTER YOU READ THIS DISTURBING REPORT, YOU EITHER DON"T CARE ABOUT YOUR NATION OR YOU EXPECT EVERYBODY ELSE TO DO THE DIRTY WORK?

Are you now living from paycheck to paycheck, wondering how your going to feed your family, making your mortgage payment.
You need to be aware of how much Uncle Sam is secretly skimming off your taxes and diverting into government freebies
for immigrants and illegal foreign nationals.

This is a document that should disturb you, because the globalist open border, free traders do not want you to see it. This is an thoroughly researched analysis of immigration costs, that the hierarchy of the U.S. government and special interests groups do not want you to read.

Now you can read the disturbing details in the new 70-page document called “The Economic and Fiscal Impact of Immigration” by Edwin S. Rubenstein (www.eagleforum.org/sources). A Manhattan Institute adjunct academic with a mile-long scholarly resume, he has been doing financial analysis ever since he directed the studies of government waste for the Grace Commission of 1984.

Yes indeed Robert our Town Council is running well.  HPC’ers are only concerned about illegal immigration at meetings.  Do they not leave after such topics are finished?  Do they not attend on non illegal immigration issues?  You answered it for us well,  Thanks.

HPC is only concerned about illegal immigration.  And here we are again with another illegal immigration speaker this month for them, Corey Stewart.  They must really think we are just plain stupid.

My taxes are low in town.  The services I receive for my taxes well exceed my expectations.  Steve Jenkins would have surely raised my taxes for the uncalled for lawsuits for his unprofessional and uneducated stance on illegal immigration.  He does not work for the best interest of the people.

HPC hopes to take over Town Council.  It’s Steve Jenkins that wants the support he can’t get.  They want to railroad us.  We are not fools.

There are more serious pressing issues.  The availability of drugs on our local streets to our kids.  It’s worse than you think but we never hear about that.  I guess thats because they don’t see tents set up on street corners with signs “Drugs Here” in the community.

The PWC Resolution denies only 8 out of the original 236 services that PWC wasn’t even sure was using them.  Any services are county services, not town services.  Steve Jenkins doesn’t have the ability to understand that.

And now some of the PWC BOS are looking in the other direction and fell they were duped by Corey Stewart.  Stewart played the game of politics and made it political to gain popularity.  He claims PWC is not affected negatively by the resolution but yet evidence in the business community shows otherwise.

Yes HPC candidates are representing HPC.  Everyone do your part and keep these ignorant people out of office.

I erred on the reference to the HPC4 not attending any of the budget meetings.  3 attended part of the first of 3 budget meetings.  They were held on 3 successive weeks not tues. afternoon. Sorry for that mistake. That was a last minute inclusion that should have been better checked. However I think the case can still be made that they have not been regulars at council meetings when illegal immigration-related stuff was not being discussed.
