Insurance companies killing us
In December 2000, I was given an excellent review by one of the best employers I’ve ever had. Life was good.
Is the Constitution still relevant?
On Thursday, the U.S. will celebrate Constitution Day, marking the date in 1787 when members of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the document that was subsequently ratified by the states. Although not without flaws, the Constitution represents a remarkable achievement concerning a federal system of republican government.

Take down old yard sale signs
One thing I cannot stand is yard sale signs all over the place. I go to the yard sale and they are weeks, sometime months, old.
Honest Kohl’s employee saved the day
I’ve thought of sending a letter to the editor on many occasions. In most instances, the thought to do so was the result of a negative incident, such as getting a parking ticket at the lot behind the movie theater when the lot was almost empty.
Let’s put this grocery store argument into perspective
While I welcome our new Martin’s, I strongly disagree with the negative descriptions some have offered about other Culpeper grocery stores.
People with disabilities are a blessing to our community
In regard to the Sept. 2 article “Residents speak out against group home proposal,” the community is in need of education.

Welcome to the SIU family
Southern Illinois University was correct in choosing one more of Culpeper’s finest athletes, running back Stevie Strother.
Thanks for supporting FanFest
On behalf of the Eastern View High School staff and student body, I would like to thank all of the patrons who visited us for FanFest ‘09 before the home football game Friday.
People can be so mean
I think it’s sad that people are discriminated against for being disabled (“Residents speak out against group home proposal,” Sept. 2).

Ashamed by negative reaction
At this point, I do not think that the community in Griffinsburg is worthy of the people he serves.
I’m OK with photo of wreck
I am bothered by the flowers and balloons that are in front of the elementary school. I would rather see one picture in a newspaper instead of an everyday reminder of a very sad day.
Thanks from Soap Box champ
Hello, I am Tyler Miller, 2009 Culpeper Stock Soap Box Derby champion. I am writing to thank everyone in Culpeper for their support this year.

Looks like more intrusion by the gov’t; this time it’s in real estate
In regard to the staff editorial Wednesday (“Catching up with local government happenings”), what was not mentioned is that the government has only given out 6 percent of the stimulus toward the homeowners who are eligible for a personal bailout.

Culpeper blessed with fine folks like Mrs. Thornhill and Matthew
This is to advise you of an unselfish act by two of your community members — one being Sherry Thornhill, owner of the Country Café, and the other her nephew Matthew.
Thanks, CSE, from Pack 196
Thank you so much for photographer Vincent Vala coming to our inaugural Cub Scout Pack 196 event Monday. It turned out to be fantastic.
Somewhat vindicated by Martin’s presence in town
A little over a year ago, the CSE posted a question of the week that was akin to: “Which of the new restaurants will be the best?” I wrote back that I didn’t think any of them were going to be anything special and that what we needed was a really good grocery store.
HOW I SEE IT: It’s time to put a cap on cap-and-trade
As Congress continues to address climate change, we’re starting to hear a wide range of estimates on what the actions of lawmakers will cost American consumers.

Front-page photo of fatal car wreck was appropriate
The photo on the front page of the Star-Exponent Aug. 28 of Alana Hester’s vehicle, was appropriate. While the photo represents something so tragic, so painful, it also represents an important and often ignored epidemic among American teenagers. Traffic crashes represent the No. 1 killer of children ages 13-19, and that is newsworthy. Some people suggest we should hide these photos and continue to be ignorant to the truth.
I’m so glad to be done with the town of Culpeper
My family held a garage sale one Saturday morning in August, before moving recently. The “esteemed” Culpeper police made it their business to stop not once but four times to ticket cars parked by people checking out our sale. They did not have the courtesy to give warnings, speak to us about directing traffic or verbally give our crowd a heads up.
Some good news on health care, courtesy CRH and CBRH
With the wide variety of negative issues you hear regarding health care today, I’m sure you’d like to hear good news in our community. My father is a new resident at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Home, and he had to be taken to Culpeper Regional Hospital last week via the emergency room.

Martin’s had me at hello
Martin’s is such a breath of fresh air.
More fine coverage by the CSE
I want to once again thank you for the inspiring front-page article Sunday about Butch Mills’ miraculous healing (“Thank you, Culpeper”). Thank you for giving summer intern Laura Kebede the opportunity to shine. The article was wonderfully inspiring and a dose of optimism that the community badly needs at this moment.
Hey, Star-Exponent: Just do your job and let the sheriff do his
In reference to Sunday’s staff editorial “Sheriff must communicate better on big stories,” it sounds to me like a reporter did not get his or her way with the sheriff and they are a little “miffed” about it.
Thank you, Samantha
A very special thank you to Samantha for your support and kindness shown to me during the loss of my precious dog, Mattie.
Walmart brigade: Charge!
You see it in almost every town USA: A controversial issue emerges and a few fanatical groups come out of the woodwork trying to persuade the governing body to vote their way.
Stephenson a man of character and service
We are Chuck Stephenson’s in-laws, and we would not be writing this if we didn’t know Chuck as being an honest and forthright individual who not only ethically served the town of Culpeper but who has volunteered his services free of charge to many businesses, friends and those in tough times.

Sen. Kennedy leaves a strong legacy
Perhaps you never knew it, but, the late Senator Ted Kennedy has touched all of our lives in a most positive way.

Keep dancing, Culpeper
I will miss the classes. I will miss you. I will miss the fun we had together. Thank you all, and keep dancing.
How to remember Alana
To post the large picture of Alana Hester’s smashed, unrecognizable vehicle on the top half of the front page is not only disturbing to her friends and family, but disrespectful to Alana.

Waxing poetic on economic bubbles
