A letter in Wednesday’s Culpeper Star-Exponent implied that the Piedmont Environmental Council endorsed a certain candidate for governor.

The lady referred to by Mr. and Mrs. Angus Green and Mr. Alexander in recent letters to the editor is an 82-year-old widow who is legally blind and has spinal arthritis.

I find it’s more helpful to know the past voting record of candidates than what they say, mislead, or infer in speeches, sound bites and ads as they campaign.

We felt the 250th anniversary celebration of our town was a smashing success in every way.

The upcoming election for attorney general could make a big difference in the state of Virginia.

For those of us who so pray, this proposed amendment adds four words to the last sentence of the Lord’s Prayer, shown in italics, below. I sent a longer version to Rome on Aug 1.

In an astonishing display of duplicity, Creigh Deeds has started running radio ads claiming that Bob McDonnell has previously supported all sorts of tax increases on everything, and that Deeds will be a champion of low taxes.

I would like to thank the Star-Exponent for the free announcement you let me have for my pancake dinner a while back. It was a huge success, and I was able to raise all the money I needed to supply my church with a new playground.

My husband and I visited Culpeper last weekend for the 250th anniversary. It was our first time there, and we had been looking forward to it for a long time, ever since I started researching my husband’s genealogy. His mother was from Culpeper and we were able to find the graves of two sets of his great-grandparents.

We would like to thank the local community for supporting our first fundraiser, an Upscale Rummage Sale, held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church Sept. 19.

The so-called “celebration” of the 250th anniversary of our town was a great disappointment.

Too much thought is put into commentary these days.

The ticket bought at a 7-Eleven location in suburban Richmond will expire if it is not claimed by 5 p.m. on Thursday.

As our town celebrates 250 years, let us remember the important role Christianity has played in Culpeper.

Residing in Culpeper, which is, indeed, located in Congressman Eric Cantor’s Seventh Congressional District, I’ve noted that Charlie Diradour, a wealthy Richmond developer, has thrown his hat in the ring to challenge Congressman Cantor in next year’s election.

In regard to Thursday’s letter “Support limited gov’t, individual freedom,” no political party wields power.  The true power base is securely lodged in “we the people.”

Two months ago, I wrote Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., a letter asking his opionion about the many czars being hired at the White House. I wanted to know if this was constitutional; did they need the advice and consent of the Senate, and how did they interact with the Cabinet?

Congratulations are in order for Worth Richardson’s excellent column Wednesday (“Medical insurance companies aren’t built to be sensitive caregivers”). While many of the talking heads we see and hear, and the print journalists we read, are well aware of the point he has clearly made, none has chosen to make it themselves.

I lived in The Village at Griffinsburg for many years, and I would like all of Culpeper to know that the residents of the Village at Griffinsburg are not the ogres that have been featured in the newspaper and by Mr. Brian Duncan.  They are people of the community who voiced their concerns about a single-family home being turned into a group home, and they had every right to do so.

The focus of our Founding Fathers was to establish a government of limited power, allowing the maximum in personal freedom. James Madison’s statement, “The essence of government is power; and power, lodged as it must in human hands, will ever be liable to abuse” is so relevant today.

In response to the Sept. 4 letter to the editor “Front-page photo of fatal wreck was appropriate,” I lost a 17-year-old brother in a car crash and did everything in my power to try and prevent my parents from seeing the newspaper, yet they saw it anyway.

I was shocked and dismayed to learn the Culpeper County Planning Commission voted 4-3 last week to recommend eviction of a 77-year-old woman, Alice Johnson, from her home located on the land where she has lived most of her life and still is a co-owner.

Kudos to the Culpeper County High School marching band for a great season-opening performance.
