A better idea for how to invest $1.5M
Published: October 24, 2009
In review of the town budget, I saw where SAFE and CCDC will receive $10,000 and $5,000, respectively. When I saw the proposed allotment for the State Theatre, I thought it was some kind of error.
Unfortunately, I was wrong.
I too enjoyed the State Theatre as a child, and the memories are priceless. However, I feel the need to question the distribution of $1.5 million to the theater. I love the arts, but I am dismayed with the Town Council’s apparent lack of moral judgment.
SAFE and CDCC have benefitted many who have faced domestic violence and strife. With the downturn in the economy, domestic violence will increase, and the need for SAFE and CDCC will be paramount to many families and their well-being. The State Theatre will benefit a much smaller group of people.
The state funds that SAFE and CDCC receive are about as minimal as the town’s allotment to these agencies. These agencies not only serve Culpeper but the surrounding areas as well. I have to ask, who is benefitting the most from this $1.5 million tax-dollar dole?
On that note, I would like to see transparency of taxpayer funds by asking for a complete public audit of the State Theatre, down to the penny. It has the status of an organization, and the board members should have no problem showing the public where the money is going.
I find it a travesty that two agencies which have a definite positive impact for the community mean so little to our Town Council.
