Bicyclists, drivers can exist with each other safely

After reading a recent letter to the editor opposing bicycles on state roads ("Bicyles, state roads don't mix," March 26"), I was immediately inspired to take out my bike and ride in and around town.
I spent part of my riding time on state roads, part on town streets, and part off the road. I am glad that I have all of these options.
I do agree with the writer that cyclists need to be especially careful on the roads. I have a rear-view mirror and I keep tabs on the traffic. I do not have earplugs in my ears. I am not too proud to get off the road if it seems prudent to do so.
However, I do not want cycling outlawed on any roads.
I am grateful for the wide, paved areas beside some roads (but consider the bike lane on West Street to be a well-intentioned waste of money) and wish there were more of them.
I am also aware that I run the risk of being hit by drunks, speeders and cell-phone addicts, but have found that most drivers are courteous and cooperative when they see cyclists on the road.
If we try to work together, I think there is room for all of us out there!
