Congress has failed the American citizen

» 40 Comments | Post a Comment

Let’s look at the recent performance of Congress as it relates to you, the American citizen. On each one of these issues, they ignored you and you did nothing:

1. Largest spending bill in hstory passed without reading

2. Largest tax bill, called Cap and Trade, passed without reading

3. Failed to secure our borders and enforce immigration laws

4. Gave $300 billion to illegal welfare

5. Bailed out failed business

6. Failed to implement the system-verification

7. Gave U.S. jobs to non-U.S. citizens

8. Failed to drill here and drill now

Now it’s time to act. You can call, write or e-mail your congressional representatives and tell them we have had enough, and if they don’t fix these problems by October we will vote them out in November and:

1. Make all laws apply to Congress

2. Delete congressional privileges

3. Restrict Congress from voting for its own raises

4. Make Congress pay into Social Security, live within their means

5. Stop giving benefits to 20 million illegal immigrants

6. Limit congressional representatives to no more than two terms

7. Get own 401(k) plan and reform congressional medical insurance

8. Throw out all congressional members who vote for bills without reading them

9. Do not reward lawbreakers

10. Start no war unless willing to win

11. Speak only English

12. Defend our borders

13. Balance budget

14. Protect our currency

That is a pretty sorry explanation.

So when you write “something like this” we’re all supposed to interpret that as meaning “the following is a big lie”.

Maybe it’s just me, but I tend to take people at their word.  When they say something I believe them unless I have info to indicate otherwise.  I will now know to be especially skeptical of your writing, and have to be on the look out for little clues that what you’re saying isn’t true.  Can’t imagine why you think that would be in your best interests.

You could have easily admitted the mistake that you thought something was true when it actually was just satire.  I’ve done that before.  Yes, it was a little embarrassing but really there is no choice.

No, but I will admit that you did not read clearly. I said “And you don’t want to come home from a war injured to hear your President say something like this either:“  Key words are “something like this”.

And upon your research you should have noted further that this incident did indeed happen, and the paraphrased quotes came from comedian Jon Stewart, making fun of Obama for even thinking for a moment that he could cut funds to our vets.

The reason I mention the punctuation is simply because it indicates that it came from a less than reliable source.

Now lets stick to the subject. Will you admit that the quote that you attributed to the president is bogus. Did he or did he not say those things?  What’s so hard about that?

I’m not responsible for the punctuation.  I just copied it as written.

The Truth:
On March16, 2009, members of the American Legion met with President Obama where he discussed “a proposal to force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries.“  The non-profit veterans service organization, American Legion, issued a statement voicing its concerns on its web site shortly after the meeting.  Click here for statement.

Commander David K. Rehbein of The American Legion said that Obama “ is looking to generate $540-million by this method, but refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be compromised by it.”

A March 17, 2009 CNN article said the “chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs vowed Tuesday that the plan would never gain the panel’s approval. ‘VA’s sacred duty is to care for veterans injured in honorable service to our nation, and the department should not turn to wounded warriors’ private insurance to pay for combat injures,‘ said Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii. ‘Under my chairmanship, the Veterans’ Affairs Committee will not advance any such legislation.‘“

On the afternoon of March 18, 2009 Fox News reported that the Obama administration has changed their mind on this plan.

Later forwarded versions of this eRumor included a quote not by President Obama but by the writing staff of the Jon Stewart show at COMEDY CENTRAL.  Stewart made fun of this proposal during his satirical news/current events program and included a fictional quote attributed to the President.

OW- It wouldn’t be surprising that Vets might not like Obama after reading stuff like this.  Stuff that isn’t even properly punctuated.  Stuff that factcheck.org says is fabricated.

But I can understand why OW posts such stuff.  She wants to believe it’s true.

How about coming up with a verifiable source for this or else retract it.  Wouldn’t that be fair?

I don’t recall things being “just fine” with the previous administration, nor did they get the free ride in the press that the current administration is getting.

Your bullet points come across very well Mr. Callahan. The knit-pickers below don’t seem to know what to do with themselves so they are just playing with words.

Yea, I agree, you don’t want to be involved in wars you cannot win. So why the build up in Afghanistan?  I thought Obama was going to stop all this and bring our kids home?  And you don’t want to come home from a war injured to hear your President say something like this either:

“Look, it’s an all volunteer force,“ Obama complained.. “Nobody made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice? It doesn’t compute..?
“I thought these were people who were proud to sacrifice for their country,“ Obama continued. “I wasn’t asking for blood, just money. With the country facing the worst financial crisis in its history, I’d have thought that the patriotic thing to do would be to try to help reduce the nation’s deficit. I guess I underestimated the selfishness of some of my fellow Americans.“

No go and do your homework, and you’ll see why veteran organizations don’t trust Obama.

“10. Start no war unless willing to win” ?? Because we’re always starting wars that we plan to lose? And then we have the cryptic: “6. Failed to implement the system-verification”. I’m all for system verification, especially when we run the risk that some sleazeball contractors might attempt to sell our government an unverified system, especially if it’s a no-bid contract, but what specificly is Mr. Callahan talking about?

Flag Comment Posted by rjma on July 06, 2009 at 7:43 am

Silly El D, because Democrats now are a majority.  Things were just fine with Mr. Callahan’s party in power.

This is a pretty wacko letter.  “Drill here and drill now”?  Exactly where is here?  What benefits is Congress giving to 20 million illegal immigrants? Who is supposed to vote for Congress’ pay raises?

So who should throw out Congress members who vote for bills without reading?  Should the same apply if they vote no?  How about if they just skim?  Does that count?

“Do not reward lawbreakers”?  Uh, want to be more specific?  “Start no war unless willing to win?“  So if by voice vote Congress say “we wanna win this war” then go right on ahead with any foreign adventure you wish?  And of course Congress gets to define “win”.

“Speak only English”.  So that would apply at home for all congressmen?  Staffers exempt?

Protect our currency?  Is that their purview and how should they do that?

Why do we need to act NOW?  Where the heck were the Callahans for the last 8-20 years?
