Honor America’s ideals: Exercise your right to vote
Published: October 16, 2009
Our America is a beloved nation. Our history, short by international comparison, makes us proud. With a wide variety of landform, America is indeed the Beautiful. Perhaps its greatest strength is its wide variety of people who cherish their freedom, which has been “built in” by our wise Founding Fathers. Arising from these roots is the ability to raise our voice in the way our nation is run through our vote.
I cherish this to the degree that in my 78th year, I have not missed voting in a single election since I was 21. Some of the elections have been more exciting than others, but I have always felt that each of them has been important. In “lesser” elections, fewer votes are cast, thereby making those that are more meaningful. In a few weeks we face just such an election.
I encourage each one of you to strengthen this wonderful nation of ours by lending your voice to those who govern us. The right to do that freely is a gift to all of us. Take advantage of that gift by going to the polls and raising your voice as one who loves our America through history, as it is now, and its direction for the future.

Thanks for writing. I hope you get to vote in quite a few more elections. I still remember seeing a woman in her walker slowly making her way to the voting station and then contrasted that with so many other younger more able-bodied people that couldn’t be bothered.
I recall looking at some voting data that showed in one local county that there were more voters over 70 than there were voters younger than 43. I realize many more of those younger one had work obligations but I’ll bet few of them needed walkers. And there is absentee voting too.
When this lady first voted in 1952, women had only had the vote for about 30 years. Unfortunately too many people now take voting as matter-of-factly.
Or another way of looking at it is “How often does anyone ask your advice on anything consequential?“ Take advantage of that every time.
