Papers should be more responsible with photos
Published: September 17, 2009
In response to the Sept. 4 letter to the editor “Front-page photo of fatal wreck was appropriate,” I lost a 17-year-old brother in a car crash and did everything in my power to try and prevent my parents from seeing the newspaper, yet they saw it anyway.
That is a horrible thing to happen to anyone. I don’t think it makes any difference if the victim is a teenager or 90 years old; it is an awful thing to see those pictures.
When this happened to my family, about 40 years ago, I called the local newspaper and told them how awful it was to see a picture of the car in the paper, and I’ll never forget what the man told me. He said that they were in the business to sell papers, and pictures and stories like that sold papers.
I think that is so sad, but it is probably true. It was a long time before my family would buy the local paper again, because we felt like they didn’t care about the feelings of people as long as the paper sold.
My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all those victims.
