Technically, it wasn’t first time

In response to Saturday’s staff editorial “Congrats to EVHS, CCHS graduates,” I would be the first to congratulate all the graduates.

I was appointed to the Culpeper County School Board and served for 14 years (1972-1986). It was a joy for me to serve.

However, this is not the first time Culpeper County has had two high schools graduating students. From 1907 to 1917, Culpeper County had five high schools: Culpeper, Lignum, Jeffersonton, Brandy and Mitchells.

This information is taken from “Culpeper: A Virginia County’s History Through 1920” by Eugene M. Scheel of the Culpeper Historical Society.

We must also recognize George Washington Carver High School, more commonly known a Piedmont Tech, when our county schools were segregated.  The smaller community schools Mrs Burke refers to were usually run 1st through 12th grade and had local community children.  Often times the highest grade available in those schools was the 8th grade.  The opening EVHS is the beginning of what can be called the “metropolitianization” of our rual community.
