Unrealistic to station EMTs at youth football games

In regard to Saturday’s letter suggesting there should be on-site EMT service provided for the CFA football games at the sports complex, it is my understanding that the Culpeper Football Association is a private organization and not county funded. While CFA has games going on, so do a number of sport teams at other locations throughout the county without standby services.
When my son was growing up and playing soccer and basketball at a variety of locations — from Emerald Hill to Floyd T. to Pearl Sample — there were never standyby EMT services. Our lucky times were to be able to have a parent who was a certified EMT on site and who could respond to emergencies.
During the times these sports are going on, other county residents may have any number of emergencies requiring EMT services, and it would not be efficient, practicial or in anyone’s good interest to have all sports covered.
In any sport there is the possibility of significant injury, but that is the risk. We must remember that most of our EMTs are volunteers, and we appreciate their services. But it is not the county or town’s responsiblity to cover the sporting events that go on around the area.

The best way to take care of this problem is for CFA to hire off-duty EMTs or Paramedics. That way, they have coverage at their games and regular County coverage is unaffected.
