You must always give respect if you want respect
Published: April 12, 2008
On April 7 I noticed a small white car parked in the driveway of my home and then at the home behind me.
The car sat there for a few minutes and backed up to turn around. The driver waved to me as she was leaving when she saw me watching out the doorway.
I think if anyone has a reason to be on your property, they should at least go to the residence and say what they want and why they are there, especially when they see you looking at them.
My parents taught me to respect other people and their property, and in order to do this you must give respect to get respect.
So in the future, if you have business on my property, have the respect to knock on my door. I am sure you would be welcome.

Ms Taylor, I’ve been a property owner for the past 45 years and I respectfully disagree with you. Over the years hundreds of strangers have driven onto my property. I’m a busy man. I don’t have time to engage in idle chatter with anyone. If they need to speak with me for some reason, fine. But I don’t take kindly to those who take up my time for no reason. The way I look at it is I respect everyone and assume all who venture onto my property have done so for some legitimate reason albeit unknown to me. So long as they leave without harming me or damaging my property what skin is it off my nose? If it bothered me I’d put up a gate &/or a ‘NO TRESPASSING’ sign.
I would assume this was a meter reader and if that’s the case, these people don’t have time to greet every homeowner as they make their rounds.
They have to cover hundreds of houses every day and don’t have time to socialize.
If the driver wasn’t a meter reader, then it’s also commonly accepted that burglars won’t knock on your door when casing your house! ![]()
