OUR VIEW: Code: Honor a great way to thank our rescue heroes

» It’s always good to recognize those who keep us safe — and those who leave a local legacy.
More than 1,000 people turned out Saturday at Eastern View High School for Code: Honor, an event that recognized the work of area first responders. It was a great way to thank local emergency personnel for being ready, willing and able to help when citizens are in need.
People in this demanding line of work — paid or volunteer — certainly deserve our devotion. But kudos should also go out to the many volunteers who helped make the free event possible.

Culpeper recently lost a dedicated resident in Eddie Dail, who will be remembered not only as one of the area’s most successful businessmen but also as one of its most interesting personalities.
Dail owned 13 Gold’s Gyms, including the one in Culpeper, and had been honored for his work with that company before dying of a heart attack Sept. 4. Good or bad, it’s true he was what many would consider a workaholic. But it should be noted that Dail helped change this community for the better by building Culpeper’s first full-scale gym in 2004.
He’ll certainly be missed.

It seems Culpeper is a place with ever growing opportunities for young children, and with the addition of a new preschool and the re-emergence of a local Cub Scout troop, that’s as true as ever.
Culpeper United Methodist Church is offering a new preschool, which has about a dozen students enrolled and held its first day of classes last month.
The reformed Cub Scout Troop 196 also met for the first time recently and has about 30 members ready to learn what Scouting has to offer.
It’s great that Culpeper is a community with so many adults determined to provide opportunities for children. The addition of the preschool and the restarting of the Cub Scout program are just the latest examples of that dedication.
