OUR VIEW: Hunter is making the community proud

» We applaud young baseball talent D’Ago Hunter and hope that our “local” baseball team is able to load up on talent like him.

D’Ago Hunter is doing something most kids, and many adults, can only dream about. On June 20 he’ll be stepping foot onto a Major League Baseball field and will be facing his peers in the MLB Pitch, Hit & Run competition at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

Hunter is already well known in the Culpeper Little League for his athletic prowess and now he’ll have the opportunity to represent our community on the grandest stage a 9-year-old could hope for.

We wish D’Ago luck and know that no matter what happens, we’re immensely proud of him.

We wish we could say we’re as immensely proud of the Washington Nationals, but this season has been another disappointment. Fortunately, help could be on the way as the Nats drafted talented college pitcher Stephen Strasburg last week. But first, the Nationals will have to sign him to a contract, and that won’t be an easy task. Strasburg and uber-agent Scott Boras are asking for something in the range of $40M. If Boras and his agent don’t waver, we see it highly unlikely that the Nats will cave in to the demands, but that could spell a public relations disaster for our “hometown” ball club. We hope that Strasburg comes to his senses and requests something a little more palatable. Like that will happen.

Back in the local sports realm, We’d like to congratulate high school coaches such as Eastern View’s Greg Hatfield and Mike McCombs for working with younger athletes to help prepare them for the next level of competition. It’s always nice to see our area coaches reaching out to our community, and we hope to see the results pay off in the future as the young players filter up to the high school programs.

There has never been a 1st pick in the draft pitcher that amounted to much….at least since 1984 and I’m not sure how much farther back.  The best was probably Ben McDonald who managed 14 wins in his best season.  History has not been kind to 1st pick pitchers. I’m sure Boras won’t be bringing that up.
