OUR VIEW: Rescuers deserve the recognition

» SUMMARY: As the condition of two accident victims improves, it is appropriate that a dedicated group of rescuers was honored Thursday.
The health prognosis for two men involved in recent serious accidents is improving.
John I. Lizotte, 22, had been in critical condition at Inova Fairfax Hospital since a tow truck collided with his pickup Sept.
1. His condition is now listed as serious, which is good news for loved ones who have been at his side since the crash.
Wyatt "Butch" Mills, 53, has been at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville since a trench collapse Aug. 30 left him trapped for nearly five hours. He is now in good to fair condition.
It was nice to see that the same day Mills' improving health became public, the people who worked so hard to free him were also recognized for their efforts.
On Thursday, the E911 Board praised emergency personnel from multiple agencies who worked tirelessly in what was a tedious and delicate rescue operation.
The area around Pawn-Mart on Bus. 29 morphed into a command center when Mills became trapped.
Rescuers with different specialties rushed to save his life, initiating the extensive medical attention that is now paying off in good reports.
Most of those who responded locally are volunteers. They give of their time to train for accidents such as these. When they arrive, they work quickly and efficiently to evaluate the situation and take immediate action.
While not every scenario ends with good news, we should never forget those who give so much to help when needed.
It is equally appropriate for them to be honored.
