OUR VIEW: Soap Box Derby proves family is still important

» The spirit of family is still alive at the Soap Box Derby of Culpeper and we’re more proud of that than anything else

The Soap Box Derby of Culpeper is the largest derby in the world. We’ve written on how humbling and amazing that is, and have applauded the organizers for their tireless efforts in helping the race make it this far.

Yet, there is something a little bigger going on here, and it’s time we properly recognize it.

In our society, the American family has taken a backseat to getting rich fast, having your life plastered all over on a “reality” TV show and sports has become more about individuals than about teams.

Not in Culpeper. The Soap Box Derby of Culpeper proved that it can bring families together, evidenced by the spirit shown by the Brown family. Just two short months removed from the loss of Carol Anne Brown, the family rallied at the derby — showing up in force to help promote the sport Carol Anne loved and to honor her memory by carrying on with the same care and devotion she showed to everyone who raced with and against her.

It was a touch of class that the Soap Box Derby of Culpeper named its Sportsmanship Award in her honor. It proved that families, either real ones or community families, can pull together after a heart-wrenching loss and still carry on.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the race, you proved that the extended American family and our community is alive and well.

The community has also come together for another worthwhile sporting event, welcoming in the folks from Bike Virginia for a two-day stay. Cyclists from across the country get to experience the warm southern hospitality Culpeper has to offer. Be sure to stop by the Depot tonight from 5 to 9 p.m. for a block party welcoming the bikers and celebrating Culpeper’s downtown.
