CHARLOTTESVILLE — A 19-year-old woman died Thursday night after being hit while walking across U.S. 29. It was the third death out of 57 pedestrian-vehicle accidents in Albemarle County since 2006, authorities said.

A preliminary investigation suggests Melissa Dawn Martin was trying to cross near where the highway intersects with Westfield Road when she was hit by a full-size pickup truck traveling southbound around 7 p.m.

Martin was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

According to Sgt. Darrell Byers, the man believed to have hit Martin stopped immediately after the incident and, as of Friday, has not been charged. Police have not released the man’s name.

Byers said the investigation is ongoing and that it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
