Culpeper County High School graduate Kamerra Brown led Delaware State to the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas April 17, where the Hornets nearly knocked off the powerhouse program from Kansas State in the opening round.

Delaware State beat the Wildcats 3-1 in fences, including a victory by Brown, but KSU put together a 3-1 win in flats then won the tiebreaker to advance. Delaware State, a second-year program, was eliminated from the tournament.

Brown, a sophomore, was named the Most Valuable Performer for DSU after winning seven of 10 competitions this year. She will also represent the Hornets at the 2008 NCAA National Student Athlete Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., May 27-29.

Brown was one of 700 NCAA student athletes selected for the conference, which accepted more than 1,900 applications from member institutions.

Tutt helps out
Reba Tutt might not be the only reason for the Pittsburgh Panthers’ big turnaround in softball this year, but the freshman has definitely been a contributing factor. The Panthers are 27-20 and 10-8 in the Big East a year after finishing 23-35 and 8-12 in the conference.

Tutt, a former standout at CCHS and Highland School, recorded her Big East Conference-leading 24th stolen base of the season last week. She needs one more steal to break Pitt’s single-season record.

Tutt is also among the team leaders in several other offensive categories, ranking fourth on the Panthers’ roster with a .333 batting average. She’s also third on the team with 42 hits and second with 33 runs scored. Tutt also has three homers and 14 RBI and has started all 47 games.

Wormley makes impact
Former Culpeper County High School baseball player Glen Wormley is wrapping up his college career at Savannah State with a solid senior season.

Wormley is hitting .227 for the Tigers with a home run and seven runs batted in. The former Blue Devil has started 22 of the 30 games he’s played in this season and helped Savannah State to a 19-18 record. The outfielder also has four stolen bases in four attempts and hasn’t made an error.
