Most freshmen need time to adjust to college athletics. Andrew Evans needed four games.
The former Culpeper County High School attacker was held scoreless in his first four college lacrosse contests, but the Christopher Newport University freshman exploded in his past two contests, racking up 11 goals and two assists.
Evans set a CNU record on March 8, notching six goals against the Tri-State Thunder and leading the Captains to a 15-5 victory. On March 12, in just his fourth college start, Evans once again led CNU in scoring with a five goals in a 13-4 victory over Hendrix.
The Captains are now 3-3 and Evans' 11 goals lead the team. He's also fourth on the squad in scoring with 13 points.
Scott helps ODU to hot start
Culpeper product and former Notre Dame Academy star Cameron Scott is in his junior season at Old Dominion and has helped the Monarchs get off to a 10-4 start, including a 3-0 record in the Colonial Athletic Conference.
A second baseman and centerfielder, Scott has struggled at the plate in the early going, hitting .071 in 14 at bats. But Scott, whose younger brother Brandon plays at CCHS, has scored three run.
He's played in seven games for ODU, starting four and has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Scott was one of six starters returning from last year's squad, when he started 40 games for the Monarchs. This year ODU was picked to win the CAA by the league's coaches.
Tutt to the rescue
Former CCHS and Highland School softball star Reba Tutt has had a solid freshman season so far at Pittsburgh, but her best game to date came March 12 as she led the Panthers to an upset victory over No. 23 Maryland.
Tutt went 3 for 4 at the plate and scored two runs in Pitt's 5-4 win over the Terrapins in College Park, Md. She also drove in two runs and blasted her first home run of the season.
Tutt's homer, a two-run shot over the right-centerfield wall, put the Panthers ahead 4-2 in the fifth inning.
The Culpeper native had started all 18 games for the Panthers and was hitting .283 in the leadoff position through Thursday.
