For the second week in a row, a Culpeper County High School graduate and Randolph-Macon field hockey standout has been honored as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Junior forward Mary McCarthy earned the award after leading the Yellow Jackets to three victories last week. She scored a pair of goals in a 4-1 win against Stevenson and had two goals and an assist in a 5-1 triumph over ODAC rival Roanoke.

McCarthy has scored eight goals as Randolph-Macon has put together a six-game winning streak over the past two weeks, but she hasn’t been the only former Culpeper Blue Devilette to excel in that time.

Fellow Culpeper product Monica Jenkins was named the ODAC Player of the Week the previous week and scored on an assist from McCarthy in the win over Roanoke.

McCarthy leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring with nine goals and four assists this season. Jenkins is second with seven goals and three assists.

While McCarthy and Jenkins have been scoring goals, another Culpeper product has been keeping the ball out of the cage during the Yellow Jackets recent winning streak.

Freshman goalkeeper and Eastern View High School graduate Nicole Woodworth moved into the starting lineup at the beginning of the month and has a 6-0 record in goal. She’s recorded 42 saves and has a 1.64 goals against average.

The Yellow Jackets are now 6-8 and 2-2 in the ODAC.

MAKING A SPLASH: William & Mary began its swim season last week and former Culpeper County High School standout Jake Maloy was a star for the Tribe.

Maloy, a sophomore, was named the Colonial Athletic Association Swimmer of the Week after winning two individual races against Towson and helping set a pool record in the 200 medley relay.

Maloy teamed with freshman Ben Ward, senior Kevin Lynch, and redshirt-freshman Max Glober to break the William & Mary rec center pool record in a time of 1:34.47.

Maloy also captured victories in the 100 back (52.07) and the 100 fly (52.38) and placed second in the 200 back with a time of 1:57:64.

As a freshmen last year, Maloy earned All CAA honors and set a new school freshman record in the 100 backstroke.

ON COURSE: Former CCHS track and cross country star Devin Cornwall made his season debut for the Virginia Tech cross country team on Oct. 3 as the Hokies took on Lees-McRae at the Dual in the Elk.

Cornwall finished third in the 6K race in a time of 20:26.

CAPTAINS’ CHOICE: CCHS is also represented on the Christopher Newport men’s and women’s cross country teams with Daniel Austin and Dira Hansen running for the Captains.

Both former Culpeper harriers ran for CNU at the George Mason Invitation on Oct. 3. Austin, a freshman, finished 94th in a time of 29:48. Hansen, a sophomore, finished 48th on the women’s side in a time of 24:22.
