Culpeper County High School senior Nolan Jenkins has had his hand in just about every bit of success the Blue Devils baseball team has had this spring.

Culpeper, which enters the Cedar Run District tournament today at Osbourn Park, finished the regular season with a 2-16 record and Jenkins picked up one of those victories as a starting pitcher last week at Liberty and earned the save in the other earlier this season at Battlefield. But Jenkins’ biggest contributions have come at the plate, where he went 2-for-2 with an RBI to help his cause against Liberty.

But that wasn’t his only big game. Jenkins hit .470 for the regular season with six doubles and 83 total bases. He also stole five bases.

BATTLEFIELD SCHEDULE: The Eastern View baseball and softball teams get a big week of Battlefield District tournament games at Courtland this week starting with the Cyclones JV baseball team playing today for the district junior varsity championship. The EVHS JV plays against King George at 4:30 p.m.

The varsity tournaments start Tuesday with the EVHS baseball team, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, facing Courtland at 7:30 p.m. The Cyclones softball team is the top seed in the tournament and plays Chancellor at 5 p.m.

STREAKING ORANGE: A perfect regular season is in the books for the Orange County High School baseball team and now the Hornets are preparing for the start of a postseason run they hope ends in a state championship.

Orange, which earned a bye in the opening round of the Jefferson District tournament after finishing 20-0 and 12-0 in the district, plays in the semifinals on Tuesday. The Hornets capped off their perfect regular season on Tuesday with a 4-3 victory over Western Albemarle. Orange rode JMU-bound pitcher D.J. Brown for five no-hit innings before the Warriors rallied late in the game, but Chris Bittner and Nick Bledsoe each had two hits to spark the OCHS offense.

MORE HORNET HIGHLIGHTS: The Orange baseball team wasn’t the only one to clinch a Jefferson District title and regional berth last week. The Hornets softball team won the regular season championship with an 8-1 victory against Western Albemarle.

Orange pitcher Micalah Sacre was on fire Tuesday, striking out 17 in the pitchers circle and scoring four runs to help her cause as the Hornets improved to 17-3.

RECORD BREAKER: Madison County distance runner Kenny Lohr broke a 24-year-old school record earlier this month when he finished the 3,200-meter in a time of 9:53.80 at the Fluvanna Invitational on May 1.

Lohr broke the record previously held by Todd Clatterbuck by nearly four seconds.

SCORING MACHINE: Madison’s softball team ended the regular season with some impressive offensive showings. The Mountaineers outscored George Mason 17-2 and Manassas Park 21-0 on back-to-back nights Tuesday and Wednesday to finish in first place in the Bull Run District with a record of 13-6 and 9-1 in the district.

Freshman Casey Racer and Chelsea Shifflett each hit their first varsity home runs in the victory over Manassas Park. Tiffany Geer hit her seventh of the season and Hannah Morrison also homered for the Mountaineers.
