CHARLOTTESVILLE —An aggressive defense and team play propelled the Culpeper Devilettes to their second win of the season Tuesday as they defeated Waynesboro 43-36 in the 7th-place game of the Daily Progress Holiday Girls Basketball Classic.
“The best part about it is we had eight girls and all eight of them played as a team,” Culpeper coach Janice Gillespie said. “That’s what they need to do.”
Candy Jones led the Devilettes with 17 points while Kayla Bryant added nine.
Culpeper fell behind in the first two quarters, but kept it close and trailed 27-24 at the half.
“We just seemed way more aggressive on defense than we have been in the past,” Gillespie said.
With the victory, Gillespie said the girls now see what it takes to win.
“What it takes to win is teamwork and that’s what they did.”
Next up, the Devilettes travel to Fauquier on Jan. 6.
