Going into Wednesday night’s game at Culpeper, the Devilettes knew they had a tough opponent to try and beat. James Monroe was looking for another win after a victory against cross-town rival, Courtland.
“Having back to back games this week made us come out with a lot of energy and eager to win,” Jackets’ coach Julian Bumbrey said.
The Jackets came out strong and fast, leading the game 45-12 at half time. The Jackets continued their success in the second half as well, defeating Culpeper 74-25.
The Jackets held the game with their fast breaks and great transitions, and the Devilettes couldn’t keep up their own game to compete with JM.
“Some of the girls hustled and played well, but our biggest problem was making our easy shots,” Devilettes’ coach Katie Shaw said. “We missed so many shots we should have made, but the girls are starting to understand our zone defense more which will help.”
Senior Bilnita Armstead led the Jackets with 31 points. She used her speed and ball control to dominate the game.
Along with basketball skills, she is also the state champion in the 300 hurdles for track and field and has many schools interested in her, including Liberty University for basketball and Virginia Commonwealth, North Carolina St., North Carolina, and James Madison for track and field.
“I haven’t even decided whether I want to play basketball or run track, so I’m keeping my options open,” Armstead said.
For the Devilettes, Chasity White led the team with 10 points followed by Kayla Bryant with six points and Candy Jones with five. Jesse Nerkowski and Brianna Washington each added two points.
With the win, James Monroe improves to 7-1 overall, 2-0 in the Battlefield District, while Culpeper falls to 0-5, 0-2 in the Cedar Run District.
The Devilettes return to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. at home against Liberty.
JV falls to JM, 38-26
The girls junior varsity team also fell to the Jackets 38-26. They were led by Jessica Bailey with five points.
