Eastern View and freshman guard Taylor Odend’hal (15) got some time away from intense game action as Culpeper County Public Schools focused on exams as the first semester came to an end.

Tuesday was a slow high school sports day in Culpeper County, but not because local schools took the day off to enjoy the inauguration.

Students at Eastern View and Culpeper County High Schools spent the early part of the week taking exams before the first semester came to an end today. So while Tuesday is normally a busy time for prep sports, particularly basketball, it was a night off for the Cyclones and Blue Devils to regroup heading into the final weeks of their seasons.

The rest might have come at a good time. Eastern View boys basketball team played four games in seven nights before getting an eight-day break. The Blue Devils boys and girls played six games in two weeks before getting a week off heading into district showdowns with Stonewall Jackson.

Eastern View might get an added boost coming out of the break if senior post player Roger Davis joins the Cyclones. Davis was ineligible during the first semester, but has been practicing with the team and sitting on the EVHS bench during games this season while waiting for the second semester to begin. Eastern View coach Walter Wright said earlier this season he expected Davis to be ready to go when the second semester began.

TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN: The Madison County boys basketball team was ranked No. 1 in Group A by the Associated Press for the second straight week. The Mountaineers, who cruised to a 14-point victory over Group AA Monticello on Saturday, even took a more firm grasp on the top spot this week.

Madison collected eight first-place votes and 96 total points in the first poll of the year last week. This time around the Mountaineers, now 15-0, received 11 of 12 first-place votes and 119 points.

1,000 AND COUNTING: Madison’s Logan Terrell scored his 1,000th career point in the victory against Monticello, but the junior forward still has a ways to go in his high school career. The Mountaineers could play nine more games this season, including three in the Bull Run District tournament, before a possible run in the state playoffs. He then has his entire senior season to rack up more points. If Terrell averages 15 points per game the rest of his career, which is just about on par with his production so far, he could surpass 1,500 before he’s done at MCHS.

HAWKS WIN: After three straight trips to the VISAA state finals the Highland Hawks had struggled somewhat this season, losing three games in a row before hammering Foxcroft for their first Delaney Athletic Conference victory of the season.

Culpeper resident Shendi Josephs scored 21 points to lead Highland to an 83-11 victory on Jan. 16. The Hawks then dropped another game to St. Anne’s-Bellfield to go to 8-6 on the season. The Hawks, who have several Culpeper products on the roster and are coached by Culpeper native Donald O’Meara, play host to Eastern View tonight at 6:30 p.m.
