Cyclones win in overtime

Despite playing with one less player than visiting Courtland for most of overtime, the Eastern View field hockey team outshot the Cougars in the extra period then scored on a penalty stroke by Jackie Bedsaul, giving the Cyclones a 2-1 victory.

Eastern View (9-3, 8-2 Battlefield District) scored on a corner opportunity two minutes into the game when Taryn Bierhuizen slipped one into the net.

Courtland answered less than three minutes later with a goal on a breakaway play to tie the game at 1-1. Neither team would score for the remainder of regulation and the Cyclones seemed to be at a disadvantage when Tricia Payne was handed a yellow card in overtime.

But despite being down a player, Eastern View outshot the Cougars 4-1 in the extra period before a scrum in the middle of the field in front of the Courtland goal resulted in the winning penalty stroke for Bedsaul.

Eastern View returns to action Friday at James Monroe in a key Battlefield District matchup. The Yellow Jackets are 8-2 and 7-1 in the district.
