Binns blows by CMS

To sum up Floyd T. Binns’ 36-0 win over rival Culpeper Middle Thursday night, all you had to do was look over at the opposing head coaches when the final whistle sounded.

Cougars’ coach Monty Fritts had almost no voice left, while Blackhawks’ coach Kemp Pullin had almost no dry clothes left after being doused by his players.

“It was water,” Pullin said. “They were chasing me with Gatorade and I’m like ‘Guys don’t ruin my clothes.’”

Pullin was soaking wet courtesy of Binns’ 10-0 record to finish the season.

“When we start coaching every year I tell them were not out here to go 7-3, were not here to be 8-2, 9-1,” Pullin said. “Were here to be 10-0.”

After an uneventful first quarter, Austin Jenkins opened the second with a 47-yard scamper for the Blackhawks, who took off from there. Bruce Mosely finished the drive with a 14-yard touchdown.

Jenkins led the Blackhawks with 75 yards rushing and a score, while Mosely had 58 yards and a touchdown. Marlin Glascoe finished the night with 52 yards and two touchdowns for Binns.

“I give the credit to my offensive line,” Pullin said. “Every year my offensive line is very well versed in who they are to block and when you can break off 30 and 40 yard runs that pays off.”

On the other sideline, where most of Fritts’ voice now resides, Culpeper’s first and last drives of the game made it all the way into the red zone, but both ended with turnovers on downs.

“This is a game where you yell a lot,” Fritts said. “It’s just that game you work for all year and you feel bad for our kids because I know how hard they worked and how hard they sweated.”

Dustin Gilbert led the Cougars in both rushing and receiving, finishing with 53 yards on the ground and four catches for 101 yards in the air. He also added a halfback pass that went for 24 yards.

“He’s a beast,” Fritts said. “He’s going to be a big-time player at the next level. He’s tough as nails, I mean he gets his elbow hurt and goes right back in on the next play.”

Culpeper, who came into the game riding a four-game win streak, started to get things going in the second quarter when a pass over the middle from quarterback Joe Riddle was snatched in the air by Gilbert, who rumbled to and up the sideline for a 54-yard gain. The Blackhawks’ Denver Jenkins halted the drive by intercepting Riddle on the next play.

“They just have a really good defense,” Fritts said. “That’s the biggest problem.”

On the succeeding drive for the Blackhawks, Mosely launched two halfback passes to Rajee Brown that fell incomplete. But the third time was the charm when Mosely, this time lining up at shotgun, nailed Brown with a 36-yard completion at the four-yard line. Binns’ quarterback Nate Yates then found Brown in the end zone to finish the drive.

“(Culpeper’s) a good team,” Pullin said. “But they’re not my team.”

While the Blackhawks season finishes at 10-0, Culpeper (4-3) still has two more games left on its schedule.

“We’ve got to teach them to just forget tonight,” Fritts said. “We got beat, it happens. We’ve got two more and we can still finish at 6-3.”
