MILFORD — In Eastern View’s first three wins of the season, the offense carried the load. Friday against Caroline, it was the defense’s turn.
EVHS (4-4, 2-3) dominated both sides of the ball in a 42-0 white wash of Caroline (0-7, 0-5).
“I think in all phases of the game that was most complete game we’ve played,” EVHS head coach Greg Hatfield said. “I thought we played well through out the game.”
EVHS’s Adrian Apperson picked off Caroline’s Zack Crabtree on the first play of the game, setting the tone for the Cyclones.
“I was looking to get a few picks this game and I was happy to get that first pick,” Apperson said.
Apperson’s interception set up the only touchdown the Cylcones would need. After an 18-yard run, sophomore quarterback Simon Pendleton finished off the first drive with a 3-yard touchdown scamper for a 7-0 advantage.
The rest of the points were just icing on the cake for Eastern View.
Alquan Newman ran in from a yard out and Pendleton added a 4-yard run in the first quarter for a 21-0 lead going into the second quarter.
Apperson struck again on Caroline’s first drive in the second quarter, intercepting Crabtree and returning it 39-yards for a touchdown.
“We put all the effort in and we worked hard and that’s Cyclone football we should have been playing,” Apperson said.
The Cylcones added a 37-yard strike from Pendleton to Conner Settle for a 35-0 halftime lead.
With the defense dominating, EVHS’s offense didn’t have to see the field much in the first half. But each time it did, it scored.
“Offensively, we scored every possession we had the ball, until late there,” Hatfield said. “I thought our guys did a good job executing tonight.”
While the Cyclones’ offense was blowing through Milford, the defense blew away the Cavaliers.
Seth Cundiff and Bilal Williams kept the heat on Crabtree with a sack each and the rest of the defense shut down the Cavs, allowing only 82 yards of total offense.
“People have been doubting us from our previous games so this win brought us all together,” Apperson said.
Hatfield heaped praise on his junior free safety and the rest of the ‘D.’
“He’s gotten better and better,” Hatfield said. “He’s gotten better each week and we got pressure on the quarterback. I’m really proud of the way he played and the whole way the defense played.”
Friday’s win was the most balanced Eastern View has looked on both sides of the ball, but Hatfield credited the balance with just taking care of business.
“In some of our other games we didn’t take advantage of opportunities that we took advantage of tonight,” Hatfield said. “That’s really the big difference. When you have the opportunity to get some points you have to get them. When you have an opportunity to get a stop and get off the field you got to do that. We did that tonight.”
Coming off the win against Caroline, Eastern View’s attention turns to across town, as they travel to Culpeper County High School Nov. 6.
“It’s really just another football game for us,” Hatfield said. “We’re not worried about who we are playing, we’re worried about us.”
