SPOTSYLVANIA — Multiple scoring opportunities slipped through the soggy fingers of the Eastern View Cyclones en route to a 27-0 loss to Courtland Friday night.

Eastern View had at least one golden chance to put points on the board in each quarter:

- A pass on 4th-and-4 at the Courtland six-yard line bounced off a Cyclone receiver and into the hands of Maha Williams for the interception in the first quarter.

- In the second, a sack and forced fumble on Courtland quarterback Ryan McBroom gave Eastern View the ball at the Cougars’ 15-yard line, where Brandon Scott had a run for no gain and three Simon Pendleton incompletions turned the ball back over.

- In the third, Courtland punter Bryan Musante’s knee hit the ground while receiving the snap, giving the ball to Eastern View at the 35 yard line, but the Cyclones ended up punting.

- The Eastern View defense forced a punt inside Courtland’s 10-yard line, but a roughing the punter penalty gave the Cougars a first down.

“We just had to take advantage of our opportunities,” Cyclones’ coach Greg Hatfield said.

“We just didn’t capitalize and that’s what we have to do as we mature as a football team. We have to capitalize on those — were in that football game the whole way and we’ve just got to finish.”

Courtland’s first possession of the game finished when Michael Bailey rushed for 13 yards to the Cyclone one-yard line, fumbled the ball into the end zone where Brandon Mazell pounced on it for the score.

In the second quarter, Courtland faced a 1st-and-37 situation due to multiple penalties, but a 62-yard bomb from McBroom to Ricky Yarris put the Cougars up 13-0 going into halftime after the blocked PAT.

“That definitely wasn’t a 27-0 ballgame,” Hatfield said. “Courtland played well, I thought our defense played well — we had a cornerback slip on one, we gave them one over our heads.”

Kirk Wilson led the Cougars (4-2, 3-0) with 175 yards and two second-half touchdowns. Billy Bowen also broke the century mark, gaining 112 yards on the rainy night.

“That’s because we gave them too many opportunities by not finishing drives,” Hatfield said. “Some of that’s on our offense. They’re a good football team and like I said were right there in that game.”

Pendleton gained 66 yards on 15 attempts on the ground for Eastern View (3-3, 2-2) and was 11-for-27 for 75 yards. Drayton Shanks caught four balls for 35 yards.

“They’re a good program,” Courtland coach J.C. Hall said. “They’re going to be good. This is their second year of varsity football — I don’t take anything away from them. Our kids love this type of weather and that helps.”
