Bayne finishes second at area meet

Eastern View’s Charlie Bayne finished in second place at the Free Lance-Star All-Area cross country meet in Fredericksburg on Tuesday.
Bayne ran neck and neck with Spotsylvania’s Tony McBride before McBride edged him out at the end. McBride crossed the finish line in 16:53 and Bayne was just one second behind.
Culpeper’s Colton Elliot finished 11th overall in 17:38, leading the Blue Devils to a sixth-place finish. CCHS tied with Courtland in points, but lost the tiebreaker when the Cougars No. 6 runner beat out Culpeper’s.
Eastern View finished seventh with Stafford winning. Riverbend was second and Spotsylvania took third.
Robert Gamache finished 32nd for Culpeper in 18:49 and Kyle Lombardi was next across the line in 18:51. Devin Diapoli clocked in at 19:20 for the Devils and D.J. Dwyer rounded out their top five at 19:22.
Jeffrey Thelin took 24th for Eastern View in 18:30. Patrick Wallach (45th) was next for the Cyclones in 19:14. Taylor Martin finished 55th in 19:29.
In the girls race, Rachel Harding finished eighth overall to lead CCHS, crossing the line in 21:29. Brooke Maloy finished 49th for Culpeper, which came in 10th as a team. Courtney Deane finished in 54th for the Blue Devilettes.
The Eastern View girls finished 14th with Brooke Croft leading the way with a 25th-place finish in 25:42. Laurel Engh was next for the Cyclones in 80th with a 25:54.
