Andy Lievertz, 31, of Gainesville, Fla., crossed through Culpeper Tuesday on his way to Washington D.C.
His odd mode of transportation is a custom-designed tandem bicycle converted into a touring road bike. Onboard are camping supplies, clothing, a solar charging station and communications allowing him to access the Internet — where his friends and family can track his progress and he can blog his journey.
Mr. Lievertz’s lengthy ride has taken him the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway, where he exited at the start of Skyline Drive. He had planned to finish in Front Royal, along Skyline Drive, but the harsh weather over the weekend diverted him to U.S. 29 and directly through Culpeper.
He will have pedaled some 2,000 miles by the time he ends his sojourn in Orlando, Fla., sometime in November.
