The Wolfpack might have captured the Culpeper Football Association Midget Division championship Tuesday night, but there was nothing small about the 21-8 victory over the Deacons.

After playing to an 8-8 tie at halftime, the bruising backfield combination of Justin Pollard and David Lambert Jr. each rumbled their way into the end zone during the third quarter to give the Wolfpack the title.

“(Pollard and Lambert) were on this team last year,” the Wolfpack’s coach Greg Orange said. “We just watched them, just worked with them in the beginning of the season and they just got better and better all season.”

Pollard opened the third quarter with a 2-yard score to give the Wolfpack the 14-8 lead with 7:53 to play. The Deacons then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Lambert capitalized with a 1-yard score to give the Wolfpack some breathing room at 21-8 with 5:10 left in the third.

The Deacons dominated the first quarter, scoring on a 10-yard run by Jeremy Yates with 50 seconds left in the frame.

“It was an excellent ride,” Deacons’ coach Scott Bothum said. “These guys are a great bunch of kids, they really are.”

The Wolfpack responded in their first play from scrimmage with a 65-yard scamper by Kendrick Moore to tie the game at eight.

“It’s heartbreaking to get to here and not get the big win,” Bothum said. “But there are a lot of other teams that would have liked to have been here.”

While Pollard and Lambert were running over would-be tacklers, Moore and D’Ago Hunter were just flying around them to give the Deacons multiple looks out of the backfield all night.

“(Hunter’s) just and all-around sportsman,” Orange said.

But in the end, there was only one thing that mattered most.

“Did you have fun?” Orange asked.

“Yes sir!” the 2009 Midget Division champs responded.
