Closing out with a win

The Culpeper Blue Devilettes varsity field hockey played a considerably different game Wednesday than on Monday.
From beginning to end the Devilettes seemed they were on a mission to destroy Stonewall in every aspect of the game.
Culpeper jumped out to an early lead and cruised to an 8-0 win.
Melissa Register, the Devilettes' top scorer, broke the single-season goal record by notching four goals. Andrea Stackpole scored two goals and Ana Green scored a thunderous goal from outside the circle. Tiffany Jebson also scored.
The Devilettes exhibited their offensive power by dominating the time of possession. Coach Peggy Allen was brief when asked the question if her team played with more intensity.
"We didn't play as well as we could have, but they had fun and just played their game," she said.
The Devilettes were down after Monday's loss. Wednesday, they got back to having fun on the field.
In their final regular-season game, the seniors led the way. Melissa Register, Ana Green, Ashley Mullins sparked the offense, frequently pushing the ball up the field. Andrea Stackpole pounded the ball into Stonewall territory every time there was a free hit.
Senior Courtney Lanham played tough defense for the Devilettes. A summer car accident put her season in jeopardy, but in the final game, Lanham showed she was back.
At halftime she was laughing and joking around with people, knowing though that this was her last home game as a Culpeper Blue Devilette.
Even though the Raiders were beaten, Stonewall head coach Aaron Chandler believed his team played to the best of their abilities.
"I believe actually we played very well considering our experience, we have a bunch of first-year players and they showed improvement against Culpeper," he said.
Chandler and his Raiders are working toward next season and finishing on a high note in their last game of the season.
"The girls showed their best considering Culpeper's tactical experience, we are just trying to improve for next season so that we can have a good year next year," Chandler said.
Afterwards, Senior Night ceremonies showed appreciation toward the senior players and their parents. Pictures, a silly-string fight, and a cake capped the Devilettes' regular season.
Allen responded to the question if this win was how the seniors wanted to end their last home game in two simple words.
"Oh yeah."
