Culpeper native Worth Richardson is in the mix to bring home part of the $30,000 purse at the McDonald’s Mid-Atlantic Clay Court Championships at the Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian.

Richardson, who coaches boys tennis at Eastern View High School, has advanced to the Round of 16 in men’s doubles with partner Jason Dunn, a former University of Mary Washington standout.

Richardson, a former player and assistant coach at Christopher Newport University, and Dunn topped J.T. Murphy, the club pro at Salisbury, and David Shay, the former No. 1 singles player at Washington & Lee University. The local duo beat Murphy and Shay, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in front of a large and hostile crowd in the opening round.

Monday night Richardson and Dunn were able to take care of former University of Virginia player Bruce Bigger and his partner Paul Warfield, 6-4, 6-1.

A victory Tuesday night against No. 8 seeded Michel Cisznek and Cris Robinson would guarantee prize money for Richardson and Dunn. The winners of the men’s doubles earn $1,200.
