Step in the right direction at CCHS
I found a memo on my desk when I walked into the office today from the CCHS Athletic Advisory Committee, RE: Blue Devil Backers. I’ve never been so excited to see a sheet of yellow paper.
This is a big step if you are a fan of Culpeper County High School and wants to see the Blue Devils turn the athletic program back around. The Star-Exponent , has been critical of the folks in charge at CCHS for not being more proactive. The new school opened up across town and the athletic director organized a booster club. The booster club worked to get people excited about the atheltic program at Eastern View and there was a lot of enthusiasm and success over there.
For most of the school year it seemed like CCHS leaders were content to try to do things the same way they had for years as a single-school county. Now they are playing catch up, but at least they are trying. The Blue Devil Backers have an opportunity to be a tremendous booster club because there are obviously a lot of people that would love to see more success at CCHS and are willing to support the school.
We’ll write more about the club in the future and print it in the paper edition of the Star-Exponent, but here’s some basic details: It’s $15 to join. That gets you a t-shirt. There are also several levels of sponsorship for families or businesses, ranging from $600 to $75. Depending on the money spent sponsors can get a variety of advertisements at games and in programs.
For more information you can contact athletic director Billy Thornhill at CCHS (825-8310, ext. 3586 or ).
Funk gets some big city press
Also coming up in the print edition of the Star-Exponent in the next few days will be stories on all-district and all-region performers for spring sports. It’s taking longer than I hoped because we’re still working on tracking down the lists for some sports, but I figured this would be a good spot to point out another honor for Eastern View baseball player Trevor Funk. Funk was named honorable mention All-metro by The Washington Post, which puts the shortstop in pretty good company.
And if you are keeping track, that’s two times The Post has featured Eastern View’s athletic success this school year. Perhaps the nation’s fifth largest paper is biased against CCHS.
