An Idol surprise
All year long I’ve watched American Idol, but I haven’t been hooked like years past. Why? Because I thought everyone knew who the winner was. Adam Lambert had the pipes, he had the looks, he had the charisma. A funny thing happened on the way to the forum though, Kris Allen proved that nice guys can finish first. Allen won the 2009 version of American Idol Wednesday night in, well, what I would call a shocker.
To tell you the truth, I never cared for Lambert. He seemed nice enough, but he knew he was good. Plus, he was already a professional. He played in “Wicked” in Los Angeles, and though it was just a chorus position, he had a shot. Allen came from humble roots, he was modest, and he seemed like that guy down the hall you’d go have a beer with while he strummed out a Dashboard Confessional tune or two.
In our society, the flamboyant rock star usually gets the girl. But if Idol was the girl tonight, Allen walked in through the back door and slipped away with her while Lambert was mugging for the cameras.
Congratulations Kris Allen, you deserved it. Don’t worry Adam Lambert, you’ll still have your record deal. And really, Adam, why not ask Queen to be their lead singer? You’d be the perfect person to fill Freddy Mercury’s (high-heeled) shoes.
