Simpsons just don’t get old
Like a fine wine, The Simpsons have only gotten better with age. Twenty years after they were first aired, the show still has a sharp wit and a jaded worldview. Sunday’s episode takes the family on another trip. Another trip might seem overdone, but this time they visit jolly old Ireland because Grandpa remembers an old pub there from his Army days.
But after they arrive, the Simpsons find that Ireland is the leader in Europe’s technology boom and leprechauns are buying HD TVs. While Homer and Grandpa get their fill of fun at the old pub, Marge and the kids visit historic landmarks — including the Guinness brewery, where we discover the secret recipe is dog water and chocolate syrup (50-50 to be exact.) Unfortunately for Grandpa, nothing is as he remembers it. The pub is empty and somehow father and son buy it. Which leads to a smoke easy, which leads yet another arrest before being “rescued” by Chief Wiggum.
The highlight of the episode is Bart writing in his notepad “Reminder: Next time visit Scotland.“
The show still gets in its licks, like when Moe arrives in a box — he didn’t ship himself, that’s just Delta’s new coach policy.
Critics may say we’ve seen Homer in court numerous times, but how many times do you see the Honorable Mr. Potato Head presiding? Yep, 20 years and the Simpsons are still going strong.
