» SUMMARY: Christian singer and “American Idol” contestant Chris Sligh is to be commended for agreeing to a special concert in Culpeper.
Chris Sligh, an “American Idol” top 10 finalist from Season 6, will be at Culpeper County High School Saturday to honor the memory of Kelsey Orndorff and raise money for two causes that were close to her heart.
It was a Sligh concert in Fredericksburg that Kelsey, a 17-year-old senior at Fredericksburg Christian School, was on her way to see when she died in a car wreck on Route 3. Local physician J. Bryon Cook was injured in the crash and spent nearly two months at the University of Virginia Health Center in Charlottesville.
Sligh, a Christian singer, slipped the Culpeper date into his busy tour schedule. He is not taking any pay for his performance, but at the request of the Orndorff family, he will be reimbursed for his travel expenses. In choosing to make the extra stop, Sligh has shown he is a class act before he sings one note.
We are glad to hear that Dr. Cook is recovering, and we encourage our readers to attend the concert, which begins at 7 p.m. in the CCHS auditorium. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased by calling 727-0297.
The band Kelsey helped found, Satellite 29, will open for Sligh. Proceeds from the concert will go to Kelsey Kares (a ministry of Teens Opposing Poverty) and Kelsey's Big Give, a local ministry to help those in need.
In Friday’s In & Around section, staff writer Catherine Amos will have an interview with Sligh.

DAY OF HONOR: To mark the 90th anniversary of Veterans Day, about 100 people gathered for a service at Culpeper National Cemetery. The day is set aside to honor the service of all veterans and is especially poignant in view of the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The cemetery and service organizations who sponsored the event are to be commended for another well-run ceremony. Let us never forget the sacrifice of those who protect this country.
