It’s all spooks and aliens in the Mount Pony Theater this weekend starting with "The Bride of Frankenstein" (Universal, 1935) tonight at 7:30.
The late great horror legend Boris Karloff (1887-1969) returns with his brain to play Dr. Frankenstein’s monster looking for love in this sequel to 1931’s “Frankenstein.” (Karloff would don the dark suit of Mary Shelley’s monster one final time in 1939’s “Son of Frankenstein.”) With Elsa Lanchester as the frizzy-haired Bride. 1 hour 15 minutes, black & white.
Saturday aliens attack in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (20th Century Fox, 1951) at 2 p.m. in the Mount Pony Theater.
Earthlings shoot first and ask questions later in this black and white classic released at the height of the Cold War. With Michael Rennie at Klaatu and Lock Martin as Gort, his eight foot tall robot. 1 hour 32 minutes. Presented in conjunction with “ALIENS! The 21st Annual Virginia Film Festival,” in around Charlottesville.
Next week in the Mount Pony Theater: "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (Columbia, 1939) shows Tuesday, Election Day, at 7 p.m. and next Friday it’s "Love Me Tonight" (Paramount, 1932) with Maurice Chevalier.
“The film is wise, knowing, life embracing and absolutely beautiful,” says Larry Smith, nitrate film specialist up on Mount Pony. “Words fail — just see it.”
Well, all right Larry, we will.
