WAYNESBOROMohawk Industries plans to lay off 40 workers at its Waynesboro plant in response to lower demand for the company's products.

City Council member Lorie Smith said officials with the carpet maker notified Waynesboro officials of the impending layoffs. The company will have about 120 workers remaining at the plant.

Mohawk laid off 73 employees in January. It had laid off 50 workers in September 2007.
