An 18-year-old man accused of robbing and shooting a convenience store clerk last month is due in court today.
Stephen R. Leavell of Culpeper is expected in General District Court at 11 a.m. to face charges of aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, wearing a mask, use of a sawed-off shotgun, cutting, stabbing or wounding in the commission of a felony and armed robbery.
According to police, Leavell entered the West Side Grocery on Sperryville Pike on Nov. 4. During the confrontation, the clerk, 49-year-old Imad Abdo is believed to have sprayed Leavell with mace. Leavell in turn, is suspected of shooting Abdo.
Abdo was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he was hospitalized for several weeks following the shooting. He was released about a week ago, West Side manager Alex Ashrifeh said Tuesday afternoon.
