Layoffs create a tense and difficult situation for everyone involved. And when jobs are cut from the public school system, it becomes a decision that directly affects a high percentage of families.
But while the proposal to let go of 33 employees in Culpeper County Public Schools is one we all wish didn’t have to be considered, it is important to note that the School Board and CCPS staff have made every effort to study the issues and approve the best possible plan.
The board voted 5-1 on Monday to base layoffs on performance rather than seniority. We think this is a wise approach. If our schools are forced to make do with smaller staffs, it is critical that the employees who remain are among the best Culpeper has to offer.

GERMANNA: Like every agency that relies on public funds, Germanna Community College knows there is less money to go around these days. But we are confident the school is striving for fiscal responsibility without hurting the services it provides.
President David A. Sam recently visited the Star-Exponent to discuss where GCC stands as the state slashes its budget for higher education. Sam should be complimented on his ability to speak openly about the situation and his willingness to do what needs to be done — even promising to cut his own pay, if it reaches that point — to help Germanna continue to provide a valuable education.

VDOT: Just yesterday, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced massive job cuts over the next year that will have a major impact on Culpeper. Local details are still emerging, and everyone is hoping for the best, but it appears many area workers and contract employees will be affected.
The silver lining is that, statewide, VDOT is looking to cut about 1,000 workers from its staff of 8,330. However, the agency has nearly 1,500 people who are fully eligible for retirement. Our hope is that those employees will do the right thing and exit in time to soften the blow.
