I have begun to hear more and more about a legislative effort that is being pushed in Congress known as the Employee Free Choice Act
Supporters have said this legislation is for American workers, but the more I learn about EFCA, the more I understand that this is not about improving things for the workers, but rather, it is about improving things for the leaders of organized labor.
As I understand it, EFCA would eliminate a worker’s right to a secret ballot when deciding if he wants to be represented by a union.
Instead of a private vote, workers would publicly sign a union card.
The union organizers, as well as everyone else, would know how you voted. However, I do not feel that it is really in someone’s best interest to let everyone know how he voted on such an important issue.
This is no different than someone being required to say who they voted for on Election Day. These are choices that should remain private.
I don’t believe any legislation can be considered “pro-worker” if it takes away a worker's fundamental rights.
I hope the working men and women in Virginia, and those who represent us in Washington, will say “no” to EFCA.
