Democrats and Republicans in the Virginia House of Delegates have chosen leaders for the 2010 General Assembly session.
The House Democratic Caucus unanimously elected its seven-member leadership team at a meeting this weekend near Richmond. The political group sets the agenda for House Democrats at the start of new sessions.
Here’s who will be leading the minority party in the Virginia House next year:
- House Minority Leader: Del. Ward Armstrong of Martinsville, attorney and small businessman; first elected minority leader in 2007; member House of Delegates since 1992.
- Caucus Chair: Del. Ken Plum of Reston, retired teacher and school administrator; member House of Delegates since 1982; as caucus chair, he will preside over daily meetings of the Democratic Caucus.
- First Vice Chair: Del. Jennifer McClellan of Richmond, attorney; member of the House of Delegates since 2006; as vice chair, she will assume the chair’s position if he is absent.
- Second Vice Chair: Del. David Englin of Alexandria, retired U.S. Air Force and vice president of a public relations firm; member House of Delegates since 2006.
- Secretary: Del. Mark Sickles of Fairfax County, corporate affairs; member House of Delegates since 2004; secretary keeps caucus minutes.
- Treasurer: Del. Jeion Ward of Hampton, teacher; member House of Delegates since 2004; treasurer oversees the use of caucus finances.
- Sergeant at Arms/Parliamentarian: Del. Rosalyn Dance of Petersburg, retired administrator, registered nurse, former mayor of Petersburg; member House of Delegates since 2005; parliamentarian keeps order at Democratic caucuses and answers procedural questions.
The Republican caucus, strengthened after picking up at least five seats in the House this month, re-elected Speaker of the House William J. Howell, R-Stafford.
They also voted to keep Del. H. Morgan Griffith of Salem as majority leader, Del. Samuel A. Nixon Jr. of Chesterfield County as caucus chair and Del. M. Kirkland Cox of Colonial Heights as majority whip. The party posts were chosen by acclamation, but the full House membership will vote on Howell's post when the General Assembly meets in January in Richmond.
