For the fifth year in a row, the town of Culpeper Treasurer’s Office has earned the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association.
According to Stephen Gauthier, director of technical services for the Chicago-based Association, the commendation is “the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting.”
“Its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by government and its management,” he wrote in an Aug. 26 letter to the town of Culpeper.
The town earned the recognition after submitting copies of its financial statements to the Government Finance Officers Association. A panel reviewed the town documents and judged it as achieving “high standards” of the program while demonstrating a “spirit of full disclosure,” according to a town news release.
“The preparation of the … application requires the treasurer’s office to examine and test our policies and procedures and when we receive notice of the award there are always suggestions for improvements,” said Ron Mabry, town of Culpeper treasurer since July. “We value this input and use the experience to improve our operation and subsequently our services to citizens.”
Notice of earning the award this year was particularly gratifying to town officials, considering most of the documents were prepared without a permanent treasurer in town hall.
Deputy Treasurer Jennifer Landreth has played a key role in maintaining the town’s financial statements since the resignation last August of treasurer Neal Deane. Mabry, former county treasurer, thanked Landreth for her effort in preparing documentation for the award.
“Without her dedication and hard work, we would not have received this award,” said Town Manager Jeff Muzzy.
The Government Finance Officers Association is a nonprofit group serving about 17,000 government finance professionals. It has offices in Chicago and D.C.
Mabry said work has already begun on preparing materials to apply for the award next year.
