The Montpelier Foundation announced Lynne Cheney, wife of Dick Cheney, as the keynote speaker this Constitution Day, honoring the adoption of the Constitution 222 years ago.
Admission to Montpelier for the event is free. The day will include special activities and educational programs for all, including 200 local school children.
Michael Quinn, Montpelier Foundation president, said it is an honor to host Mrs. Cheney.
He said she has “an exceptional knowledge” of American history as well as an interest in educating young people about their heritage. Cheney has authored several children’s books on U.S. history like, “We the People: the Story of Our Constitution” and “America: A Patriotic Primer.”
Mrs. Cheney holds a Ph.D. in 19th century British literature from the University of Wisconsin.
Congress created Constitution Day in 2004 in an effort to educate Americans “in their responsibilities and opportunities as citizens of the United States.”
President Madison, an Orange County native, is known as “Father of the Constitution” for his role in researching and crafting the document.
Thursday’s public program on the front lawn at Montpelier starts at 12:15 p.m. and will include music by the U.S. Marine Corps Band.
