The Fauquier County Board of Supervisors has approved a $247.6 million budget for the 2011 fiscal year.
The budget includes $188.1 million for operating costs, including $122.6 million for the school division and $65.5 million for the general government. Debt service expenditures total $13.6 million with $12.4 million for debt service on school division projects and $1.2 million for county government projects.
General fund expenditures will decrease by $8.9 million from FY 2010, eight county government positions will be eliminated, including three currently-filled positions, and the local transfer to the school division will decline by about $8 million. Salaries for county government employees are frozen for the second straight year. The board reduced the County Administrator’s recommended expenditures for the general county government by $2.4 million.
Overall, Fauquier officials report the county’s taxable value fell by 21.8 percent, leading them to increase the real estate tax in order to generate sufficient revenue to maintain services. The supervisors set the real property tax rate at 97 cents per $100 in assessed value.
