A 14-year-old freshman at Warrenton’s Highland School was killed in a single-vehicle wreck on Clover Hill Road early Sunday morning.
Remington resident Wyatt Ellison Flory, who died at the scene, was the front-seat passenger in a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup, according to Sgt. Les Tyler, the Virginia State Police spokesman for the Culpeper Division.
The crash happened on the gravel part of the road around 1:35 a.m., just a half a mile east of Route 640 in the northeastern part of the county near the Fauquier line.
Tyler said the 16-year-old driver — who also had a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl in the backseat — crested a hill, lost control, ran off the road and struck some trees.
Trooper J. Hathaway responded to the wreck, which is still under investigation.
“Speed is a factor in this accident,” said Tyler, who added Flory was wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact.
According to a witness, it took rescue workers about 45 minutes to extract the girl from the truck.
The VSP crash reconstruction team assisted with this wreck.
