When someone grows up loving baseball the way Brandon Scott has, it can be tough to finish an illustrious high school career.
But for Scott, the opportunity to keep swinging the bat in college has presented itself. The 2010 Eastern View graduate will play Division I baseball this upcoming season at Mount St. Mary’s (Md.).
As sports figures seemingly become more and more self-centered (we’re looking at you Bron-Bron), Scott’s story is refreshing.
He bounced around the diamond at Culpeper and Eastern View just looking for an opportunity to play, and when a younger player came forward, he had no problem relinquishing his position to him. His team-first mentality is rare in this day and age, and he learned it from watching his older brother Cameron at Old Dominion University.
The Scott family is one that lives and breathes baseball, and now they’ll have four more years to enjoy their favorite college sport as Brandon hones his craft.
He has lofty goals of someday playing in the “show,” but he has to overcome doubts about his size. There’s no doubting the size of his heart, however, and we’re sure that will give him an edge in college.
Good luck, Brandon. We’re looking forward to watching you turn double plays at second base for The Mount.
Just call Culpeper the county of champions. We can thank Zamora Boxing Gym for that, as Gabby Holloway and Juan Vazquez brought home titles in the 145-pound weight class at the Barbarian Fight Club’s “Fight Fair” last weekend.
Mixed martial arts is growing in our community, and the commitment of these two fighters has paid off with gold. Winning a belt can help propel fighters to professional matches, and we hope to see Holloway and Vazquez defend their titles and continue to move up in the sport.
